Elder Justice Act Introduced The Elder Justice Act was introduced on March 29, 2007 in both the Senate and House. S. 1070, the Elder Justice Act was authored in the Senate by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and co-authored by Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) with original co-sponsors Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) and Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR). On the House side the EJA companion bill, H.R. 1783, was authored by Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) and co-authored by Rep. Peter King (R-NY). Goals and Activities The Elder Justice Coalition, through national and grassroots advocacy, educational briefings, media outreach, research, and information dissemination seeks to: * Increase public awareness of the tragedy of elder abuse, neglect and exploitation at the local, state, and national levels. * Increase awareness and support for the Elder Justice Act in the Senate as a comprehensive approach to addressing elder justice issues. * Conduct a parallel advocacy effort in the House of Representatives. * Work for expedited consideration of the Elder Justice Act before relevant Senate and House Committees and Subcommittees. * Monitor and appropriately influence other relevant legislation and regulations that pertain to the prevention of elder abuse, neglect and financial exploitation.
